# Explain how the structure of a leaf is adapted to allow efficient photosynthesis.

## Mark scheme (4 marks)

1. The leaf is thin / flat, which allows light to penetrate to the cells inside
2. The palisade mesophyll cells are packed with chloroplasts, which absorb light for photosynthesis
3. Stomata allow carbon dioxide to enter the leaf (for photosynthesis)
4. The spongy mesophyll layer has air spaces that allow carbon dioxide / gases to diffuse to the cells
