# Explain how small molecules called monomers are used to make a polymer such as poly(ethene), and describe one use of poly(ethene) in everyday life.

## Mark scheme (4 marks)

1. Monomers are small molecules that join together (to form a polymer)
2. The process is called addition polymerisation (or polymerisation)
3. Ethene monomers contain a carbon-carbon double bond which opens/breaks to allow monomers to join, forming a long chain
4. A correct everyday use of poly(ethene) stated, e.g. plastic bags, plastic bottles, packaging film, cling film
