# Explain how a lever can be used to lift a heavy load using a small effort force. Refer to moments in your answer.

> A gardener uses a long metal bar as a lever to lift a heavy boulder. The bar is rested on a small rock (the pivot) close to the boulder.

## Mark scheme (4 marks)

1. A moment is the turning effect of a force / moment = force × perpendicular distance from pivot
2. The effort force is applied at a greater (perpendicular) distance from the pivot than the load
3. A larger distance produces a larger moment for the same force / the effort produces the same moment as the load using less force
4. The lever is in equilibrium when the clockwise moment equals the anticlockwise moment / the load is lifted when the effort moment equals or exceeds the load moment
