> Ethanoic acid is the second member of the homologous series of carboxylic acids. It is a weak acid found in vinegar.

## Mark scheme (4 marks)

1. Ethanoic acid reacts with metals (e.g. magnesium/zinc) to produce a salt and hydrogen gas
2. Ethanoic acid reacts with carbonates (e.g. calcium carbonate) to produce a salt, water and carbon dioxide
3. Ethanoic acid reacts with bases/alkalis (e.g. sodium hydroxide) to produce a salt and water (neutralisation)
4. Ethanoic acid solution has a pH below 7 / turns litmus red / turns universal indicator red or orange
