# Describe the differences between arteries and veins in terms of their structure and the conditions under which they carry blood.

## Mark scheme (4 marks)

1. Arteries have a thick muscular/elastic wall whereas veins have a thin muscular/elastic wall
2. Arteries have a smaller lumen whereas veins have a wider/larger lumen
3. Arteries carry blood at high pressure whereas veins carry blood at low pressure
4. Veins contain valves to prevent backflow of blood / arteries do not have valves
