# Describe how the small intestine is adapted to absorb the products of digestion efficiently.

## Mark scheme (4 marks)

1. The small intestine has a large surface area
2. Due to the presence of villi (finger-like projections / folds on the inner wall)
3. Villi have a good blood supply / network of capillaries / are well supplied with blood vessels
4. This maintains a concentration gradient so that absorbed molecules (e.g. glucose / amino acids) move continuously into the blood by diffusion
