# Deforestation is carried out in many parts of the world. Explain how deforestation can lead to an increase in the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

## Mark scheme (4 marks)

1. Trees/plants absorb/take in carbon dioxide during photosynthesis
2. Fewer trees means less carbon dioxide is removed/absorbed from the atmosphere
3. Felled trees are often burned, releasing carbon dioxide
4. Decomposition/decay of dead trees/plant material by microorganisms releases carbon dioxide
