# Bacteria and fungi are both used in food production. Describe four features of bacteria that distinguish them from fungi.

## Mark scheme (4 marks)

1. Bacteria are prokaryotic / do not contain a nucleus, whereas fungi are eukaryotic / contain a nucleus
2. Bacteria have a cell wall made of murein / not chitin, whereas fungi have a cell wall made of chitin
3. Bacteria contain plasmids / loops of DNA in the cytoplasm, which fungi do not have
4. Bacteria are smaller / lack membrane-bound organelles such as mitochondria, whereas fungi possess membrane-bound organelles / mitochondria
