# A wind farm generates electricity using renewable energy resources. Describe what happens to the electricity generated at the wind farm before it reaches homes and businesses, and explain why each step is necessary.

> WJEC GCSE Physics (Wales) — 1.2 Generating electricity · Describe · 4 marks

> Wind turbines generate electricity at a relatively low voltage. This electricity must be modified before it can be transported efficiently across the National Grid and then used safely in homes.

## Mark scheme (4 marks)

1. The voltage is increased (stepped up) using a transformer before transmission
2. Transmitting at high voltage reduces energy loss in the power cables, making transmission more efficient
3. The electricity travels through power cables across the National Grid
4. The voltage is decreased (stepped down) using a transformer before reaching homes and businesses so it is safe to use
