# A student stretches a rubber band and then releases it. The rubber band returns to its original shape. The student then stretches a metal wire beyond its elastic limit and releases it. The wire does not return to its original shape. Compare the deformation of the rubber band with the deformation of the metal wire.

> AQA GCSE Physics (8463) — 4.5.3 Forces and elasticity · Compare · 4 marks

## Mark scheme (4 marks)

1. The rubber band undergoes elastic deformation
2. The rubber band returns to its original shape/length when the force is removed
3. The metal wire undergoes plastic deformation
4. The metal wire does not return to its original shape/length because the elastic limit has been exceeded
