## Mark scheme (4 marks)

1. Meiosis starts with a diploid cell (containing two copies of each chromosome) / the parent cell is diploid
2. Two divisions are needed to reduce the chromosome number from diploid to haploid (half the number of chromosomes) in the daughter cells
3. The first division separates homologous chromosomes, and chromosomes can be arranged randomly / independently assorted, producing genetic variation
4. This results in four genetically different haploid daughter cells (gametes)
