Explain why the sports drink is described as a formulation rather than a pure substance, and describe how paper chromatography could be used to find out whether one of the colourings in the drink is a pure substance or a mixture.

## Mark scheme (5 marks)

1. A formulation is a mixture designed for a particular use / made up of exact quantities of pure substances
2. The sports drink contains more than one substance / is not a single element or compound
3. Place a spot of the colouring on the baseline of a piece of chromatography paper and place the paper in a suitable solvent
4. The solvent (mobile phase) travels up the paper (stationary phase) carrying the substances in the colouring
5. If the colouring produces a single spot it is a pure substance; if it produces more than one spot it is a mixture
