# A doctor examines a tissue sample from a patient's liver. She notices that some liver cells are dividing to replace cells that were damaged by disease. Explain how the liver cells produce new cells that are genetically identical to the original liver cell.

## Mark scheme (5 marks)

1. The cell replicates / copies its DNA (before division)
2. So that each new cell receives a full copy of the genetic information / all 46 chromosomes
3. The cell divides by mitosis
4. Two daughter cells are produced (from one parent cell)
5. The daughter cells are genetically identical to the parent liver cell / to each other, because they contain the same DNA
