# A couple are told by their doctor that they are infertile. The doctor suggests they consider in vitro fertilisation (IVF). Describe what happens during IVF and explain why IVF may be successful for a couple where infertility is caused by the woman's body not producing enough follicle stimulating hormone (FSH).

## Mark scheme (5 marks)

1. IVF involves fertilisation of an egg using sperm outside of the body
2. FSH is given to the woman / administered as part of IVF treatment
3. FSH stimulates the maturation of eggs in the ovary
4. Mature eggs are collected from the ovary
5. The fertilised egg(s) / embryo is placed back into the woman's uterus / womb
