How to get a grade 9 in GCSE Chemistry

What a grade 9 answer does

  • Show full working on every calculation (moles, concentration, yield, atom economy) — method marks save you when the final number is wrong.
  • Explain properties from structure and bonding step by step (e.g. why giant covalent structures have high melting points).
  • Know the required practicals (titration, electrolysis, rates) including risks and how to improve accuracy.
  • Balance equations and quote state symbols — easy marks students drop.

Why students miss the top grade

  • Skipping working and only writing the final answer.
  • Confusing "strong/weak" with "concentrated/dilute".
  • Muddling ionic, covalent and metallic bonding explanations.

The method that actually works
